polarization
The distinction made in the Financial Services Act (1986) between intermediaries who give advice on investments and act as a representative of one company (a tied agent) and those who are fully independent (see independent financial adviser) and able to advise on the full range of products offered by different companies. This polarization has caused some controversy and confusion amongst consumers. It has also raised doubts about the impartiality of advice provided by fully independent intermediaries. Due to the costs associated with maintaining a fully independent status, the majority of High-Street banks and building societies are now tied to one particular company, prompting concerns over the extent to which, at the retail level, the resulting limited consumer choice contributes towards the original objective of investor protection.
